RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
