Our Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

At first glance, this album could seem closer to a challenging university examination than a new pop project from a musician who just had a last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided into four distinct movements and voiced in 13 languages, this is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently via the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is launched skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant presence of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing feels almost a miracle, with complete credit belonging to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and the present, its ambitions are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. What truly elevates her fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful energy comes forth clearly on a stirring Italian song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls away, and there's a spontaneous giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds in like comedic impact. The track then shifts to the wild track driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux lies in you never quite understand—or even want to predict—where you is going to next."

Almost every song concludes in a totally distinct point than how it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work starts out dark and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic choir enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed by a different powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter from discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
