An individual who laced sweets with sedative and gave them to children at a summer camp in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offenses against two children who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and an older person experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

However, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was held in detention prior to a further hearing on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he managed.

Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the young males "for many years", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.

She said Ruben had been capable of justifying this for many years as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had concerns in recently.

The legal representative continued: "This year his stepson had suspicions about the activities, for good reason.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor explained objects including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were located, and his stepson alerted the authorities about his concerns.

She said the defendant proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six children that night - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that stage," she added.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing the police response of the events.

Mrs Prior said the children were struggling to walk due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson contacted the authorities again.

She explained the defendant then played the "candy game" in a area of five minors.
