Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
