Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
