Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
